Electrical Engineering Bachelor of Science Degree
2009-2010 Curriculum

It takes four or five years to earn a bachelor of science degree in electrical engineering, depending on how well a student's high-school courses have prepared him or her for studying engineering.  The four year plan of study below shows the courses a student would take each semester to complete the degree in four years.

Elective Courses
The Freshman Science Elective must be either University Physics II (PHYS 2074) or University Chemistry II (CHEM 1123 and its lab CHEM 1121L).  If University Chemistry II was taken as the Freshman Science Elective, then University Physics II must be taken as the Sophomore Science Elective.  If University Physics II was taken as the Freshman Science Elective, then the Sophomore Science Elective may be any of the following courses:

CHEM 1123 and CHEM 1121L, University Chemistry II
BIOL 1543 and 1541L, Principles of Biology
BIOL 2213 and 2211L, Human Physiology

If a student is sure that he or she wants to become an Electrical Engineering major, then it is recommended that University Physics II be taken as the Freshman Science Elective.  Taking University Chemistry II as the Freshman Science Elective will not prevent a student from majoring in Electrical Engineering, however.  No hours will be lost or wasted.

The University Core Elective in the freshman year is a Humanities or Social Science course from the approved list.  See the Undergraduate Handbook for more details, and for a list of approved courses.

The Technical Electives shown in the senior year are upper level courses in engineering, math, & science which depend on the specialty area in which a student is interested.  The Specialty Areas page lists the most common specialty areas in electrical engineering, and the page for each specialty lists several recommended elective courses for that specialty.  A student who knows which specialty area he or she is interested in should visit the appropriate specialty page to see a list of recommended elective courses.

The bachelor of science degree in electrical engineering includes 15 hours of technical electives in the senior year.  Nine of these hours must be electrical engineering courses at the 4000 or 5000 level.  The remaining 6 hours may be in Math, Science, or any field of engineering, and need only be 3000 level or above. (Data Structures - CENG/CSCE 2143 is an approved technical elective.)

The Math/Science elective in the junior year must be chosen from the following list.  The best choice of Math/Science elective depends on the specialty area in which a student is interested.

BIOL 1543 & 1541L  Principles of Biology
BIOL 2213 & 2211L  Human Physiology
CHEM 1123 & 1121L, University Chem II
CHEM 3504  Physical Chemistry I
CHEM 3603  Organic Chemistry I
MATH 3083  Linear Algebra
MATH 3353  Numerical Methods
MATH 3423  Advanced Applied Math

MATH 4443  Complex Variables for Applications
MEEG 2703  Computer Methods in ME
PHYS 2094  University Physics III
PHYS 3133  Analytical Mechanics
PHYS 3544  Optics
PHYS 3614  Introduction to Modern Physics
STAT 4003  Statistical Methods

The Engineering Science Elective in the senior year must be one of the following courses:

MEEG 2023  Introduction to Mechanics
MEEG 2303  Introduction to Materials
MEEG 2403  Thermodynamics
