Keith C. Burgers received the B.Sc.(Eng) Degree in Electrical Engineering from the University of Cape Town in 1976, the M.Sc.(N.R.S.E.) and D.I.C. in Nuclear Reactor Science and Engineering from Imperial College (University of London) in 1980, and the Ph.D. Degree from Rand Afrikaans University in 1993. He served two years National Service in the South African Navy (1977-1978), where he worked as an engineering officer on ship based maintenance and electronic design. He subsequently worked at Koeberg Nuclear Power Plant (South Africa) as an engineer in a middle management position (1980 through 1987) in the Instrumentation Maintenance Department, leaving as Head of the combined Nuclear and Conventional Instrumentation Sections. A registered Professional Engineer, he went on to a largely self-employed based career of design and development with industrial clients, focusing on Power Electronics and the design and fabrication of specialized drives and high voltage, high power switched mode power supplies. He joined the University of Arkansas on a contract in April 1994 as a Research Assistant Professor and continues to contract back to the University, at times teaching and carrying out power electronic packaging research and contracts at HiDEC. He has also taught and carried out research projects at the University of Cape Town during this period, while continuing with a wide variety of industry driven contract design and development work (both in the US and in South Africa). Currently, Dr. Burgers is an Adjunct Assistant Professor in the Department.
